The fifth Records for Sociable Plover in Kuwait 2009



Today on Sunday 08 / 11 / 2009 around 8:30 am at Pivot Field in Sulybiaha i managed to see tow Sociable Plover ( Vanellus gregarious ) walking among Northen Lapwing on the grass .



This is the fifth record for Kuwait , the first record in 19 / 03 / 1971 , by J webb , the second in 12 / 12 / 1999 by M Shehab , the third one in 15 / 01 / 2000 by M.O. Chichester accoarding to the book of George Gregory The Birds Of The State Of Kuwait published in 2005 and the fourth one was in 29 / 12 /2008 by Abdulrahman Alsirhan .



This bird is listed on the IUCN as Threatened red listed species in the world due to a hunting problem , it is suggested that the total number remaining from this bird in the world about 2000 - 3000 , the bird now been uder intesive watching and monitering by groups from Kazakestan and others especially in wintering resting placese such as Syria where most of the Sociable Plover resting thier and face shooting problem .



The place that the Sociable Plover had been seen today was same place when seen last year in 29 / 12 / 2008 , this give us an indication that the Pivot Field is a good habitat for birds , the food is abundant such as seeds , larva's , also this private farm planting different type of fodder like Berseem , soya , durra ... etc , beside of that the farm is secured against the hunters



The interesting thing of this bird that the sociable Plover migrating rout is only in Asia cotenant and small part of Africa , it breeds in Russia and Kazakhstan during summer time , then it moves south to Syria until reach to Sudan in Africa during winter time for resting .
